Can your employer require you to get vaccinated? Houston Methodist became a case study when hospital workers sued to stop a vaccine mandate but lost. The culture war going on across America took root at Houston Methodist hospitals, where the requirement that all employees get vaccinated had prompted a petition, protests and a lawsuit. NICU nurse Kathy Tofte, who quit over the mandate, is among 178 employee resisters who were suspended without pay, given a deadline of Monday to get vaccinated or be fired. Primary care physician Dr. Josh Septimus has little patience for hospital workers who refuse to get vaccinated. “I think that’s selfish,” he said. “And I think it’s unethical.” In the hospital’s administrative offices, Alejandra “Alex” Chamorro teared up talking about what her life would be like had the vaccines been available sooner. She and her husband both got COVID-19, but her husband did not recover. Hospital CEO Marc Boom is behind the vaccine mandate. He says employees can choose but if they don’t want the vaccine, “we’re sorry to see them leave.” Now Boom is hearing from colleagues eager to hear how he did it as other elite hospitals start to follow suit.
