Dr. Bill Foege is arguably one of the most important leaders in global health. He was instrumental in ridding the world of smallpox—the only human disease ever eradicated. And he is a dear friend and mentor to Melinda and me.
One of my favorite stories about Bill is the day he arrived in a remote Nigerian village to vaccinate everyone against smallpox. Since most of the villagers were out working in the fields, Bill was doubtful they could reach everyone. But soon enough, people began flocking to the vaccination site, and Bill and his team were able to vaccinate several thousand villagers. When Bill asked the chief how he got so many people to show up, the chief replied, “I told everyone to come and see the tallest man in the world.”
