We’re excited to announce that we’re now called Love For Our Elders!⠀ ⠀ Read on to learn why we’re changing our name:⠀ ⠀ We’ve come to realize that our organization’s name included language that contradicted the work we pour our hearts into every day.⠀ ⠀ Elderly is a term that implies fragility and limitation. “If you ask a room of people at a senior center who there is a member of ‘the elderly,’ you might get only reluctant hands or none,” said Clara Berridge, a gerontologist at the University of Washington School of Social Work (Pinsker). “The fact that people don’t often voluntarily relate to this term is a strong reason to not apply it to them.”⠀ ⠀ We want our work to feel inclusive, so we’re now calling ourselves Love For Our Elders. I’m so proud we get to fight loneliness with love for our elders during this time and always.⠀ ⠀ Look out for our new logo beautifully designed by Julia C. that represents how we send love, even remotely!⠀ ⠀ You can find us at loveforourelders.org⠀ ⠀ 💜Jacob, founder & executive director⠀ ⠀ Pinsker, Joe. “When Does Someone Become 'Old'?” The Atlantic, Atlantic Media Company, 28 Jan. 2020, www.theatlantic.com/family/archive/2020/01/old-people-older-elderly-middle-age/605590/.
