Cancer occurs when certain cells grow out of control and spread through the body. High-energy radiation, such as microwaves, can cause this damage and may lead to cancer over time.
Microwave ovens use a low-energy type of radiation called radiofrequency (RF). People can also find this type of radiation in the sky, earth, Wi-Fi, and radio signals. Experts advice standing directly in front of microwaves during use. They also recommend not standing against a microwave oven while it is on.
According to the National Cancer Institute, the rate of colorectal cancer in adults younger than 50 years of age has doubled since the 1990s. It is estimated that by 2030, approximately 1 in 10 colon cancers and 1 in 4 rectal cancers will be diagnosed in people under 50 years old.
