For those just getting to know us... This is a picture of Joshua Darden, who founded the Studio, and Joyce Ketterer who now owns it. Joshua is the first known black typeface designer ever, and one of the most important type designers of his generation. Darden Studio's goal has always been to advance and protect Josh's place in history. Darden Studio was founded amidst an ugly court battle over Freight. He won and wanted to remain independent. In 2005 Josh had released Freight through Phil's Fonts (aka Garage Fonts). Darden Studio does not control Freight. Phil's Fonts has since released additional families under the Freight name that Josh did not make. Josh (then 27) and I (then 29) met in 2006. Later that year Darden Studio would publish Omnes. Omnes is still our bestseller. By 2013 it had enough adoption that Josh could celebrate his 20th year as a published font designer by going on sabbatical at age 34. In 2016, Josh and I agreed to expand Halsey, a heavy display font that Josh drew years ago. @sorkineben , @lucassharp, @verbosus (with help from @gerryleonidas and others) came together to become the dream team for the project that would result in Halyard. In 2019, after working for Josh for 13 years, I bought the company from him. In a day to day way, nothing has changed. Josh and I talk as much now as we ever did, and he still has a financial stake in the company. My job title is the same, my mission is still to run the company so he doesn't have to... In many other ways, everything’s changed. Partnerships in the font world between a designer as a business side person are hardly new, but usually the designer is the extrovert. We never do things the "usual way" at Darden Studio so, in recent years, the company has made a name for itself as the home of font licensing discourse, because that's my thing. I am also very proud of the voices of all our members not mentioned in this brief history: @viktoriya_grabowska @fhardwig @quitequinn and Rob Esmay (who, like Josh, isn't on Instagram). - Joyce
