I hope sincerely that Lara Spencer never had adults tease her for practicing makeup and teasing out her hair while pretending to be in front of a camera.
The dismissive attitude she took, directed at a young prince taking ballet, was classless and bigoted.
Ballet teaches life skills that take men far beyond teleprompted hot takes on morning shows. Dance teaches discipline, repetition, and grit.
Dance is mental, physical, artistic, and punishing, yet also liberating and refining.
Male dancers face a unique adversity where they are ridiculed, discouraged, and teased — way before any paycheck or applause becomes possible.
Thankfully my family, teachers, and community supported my passion for dance, eventually leading to my career as a performer. I’ve traveled nationwide and abroad in Africa, Europe, Australia, and Asia. I’ve earned my living by loving my passion, and I’m proud to be a professional male dancer.
Unlike the young prince, I don’t have a vast fortune or royal family that will cultivate my every interest, but I do have a lifetime of proving people like Lara Spencer wrong, and to the young boys like me who watched GMA and felt discouraged to dance, I hope they dance.
