EDIT: It would appear that Wikipedia has Anna's date of death wrong. It's quite clear from her gravestone that she passed away on 31st January, not 3rd January. Thanks to those who spotted this.

#OnThisDay, 3rd January 1881, Anna Matilda Whistler (née McNeill) died after living in St. Mary's Terrace in Hastings. She is buried in Hastings Cemetery. The painting of her, by her son, the painter James McNeill Whistler, is often referred to as Whistler's Mother. Photos below show the painting and her grave.
