Founded in 1859, Queensland Health is one of the state’s oldest government departments. To celebrate our rich history we’re starting a Flashback Friday series.
Over the coming weeks we will be sharing posts with old and new photos of some of our hospitals throughout Queensland. If you’ve got a hospital you’d like to see featured let us know below!
Our first post is about Charleville Hospital, situated in the South West Hospital and Health Service.
... The first hospital in Charleville was established in 1885. The first nursing staff were a married couple who became wardsman and matron respectively. Work then started on the current hospital building in 1939. The two-storey masonry building was designed to act as a base hospital for the western district of the South West. World War II delayed the completion of the hospital, with construction being finished in 1944.
A major refurbishment was undertaken in 1984, including construction of additional buildings. The hospital recently underwent an $8.69 million rectification works program which was completed in August 2015. Today, the hospital is a 15-overnight bed, six day procedure chairs, acute care facility that provides 24-hour acute and emergency care, including maternity and theatre services, plus retrievals with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, which has a major base in the town.
The grounds regularly receive visits from grazing kangaroos to the delight of patients, visitors and staff alike :)
