*A VENTURE HOME NEWS EXCLUSIVE*
A report from our new freelance reporter The Henchman with No Name on assignment from Sketchfest 2017 Presents: An Afternoon with "The Venture Bros." at Cobb's Comedy Club in San Francisco, California on Sat Jan 28, 2017.
What I learned at SF Sketchfest 2017 “An Afternoon with ‘the Venture Bros’”...
In no particular order:Jackson has recently moved to Los Angeles.
The narrative of the program has changed in the past because of the fan base figuring out details before they were revealed (no examples were given).
One censored moment was in the pilot where Brock, after killing the crocodile who came out of the baggage compartment of the Venture jet, slits the crocodile open and sets it on fire. When asked why he did that, he answers “Had to, it was pregnant.”
In “Twenty Years to Midnight” Doc Venture’s original exclamation of “Jesus Christ Superstar!” was deemed unacceptable by the network so the exclamation was changed to “Ladysmith Black Mambazo!”
Jackson expressed that he, generally, does not care for “voiceover actors” which lead to the casting of Steven Rattazzi (Doctor. Orpheus), James Urbaniak (Rusty Venture) and, by association, Paul Boocock (Jonas Venture).
James Urbaniak has not seen any of the in-progress scripts AND he has a Gmail address. Jackson said he would send some of the in-progress scripts to him.
8 of the 10 episodes for season 7 are written.
James Urbaniak proposed to his girlfriend at the end of the panel. Their first trip away together was to SF Sketchfest 2 years ago.
Jackson and Michael Sinterniklaas (Dean Venture) dated the same woman (they were VERY clear that this was NOT at the same time). This somehow turned into a story of Sinterniklaas going to a Halloween party as “Male Britney Spears”, stubble and all, while somehow getting more and more cross-dressed-ed as the evening went on via, seemingly, everyone he came in contact with adding more and more to the costume. It was mesmerizing until Dana Gould cut the whole story off…
Referencing that “The Venture Bros” has been nominated for an ANNIE Award, Jackson commented “We’re not going to win” repeatedly, but seemed pleased to be nominated.
When asked if there would be more Dermott and/or Triana next season, Jackson said they don’t like to reveal story points (we were waiting for some variation of the Doc Hammer quote of “All questions pertaining to the program will be answered by the program”), but that Triana will not be back. “How many of you are still in touch with your crush from when you were fifteen?”
They will be working on Season 7 and Season 8 at the same time.
Part of the challenge of the next two seasons is the fact that everything is now such a hot-button topic that they cannot be as fast and free as previous seasons because someone, somewhere will have an on-line conniption fit (not a direct quote).
In general, the moderator for the event, Dana Gould, spent FAR too much time talking about himself and attempted to turn almost every single topic to his past network pitch meetings and “Simpsons” experience.
The previous year was much more Venture-rific where there was only the panel who at one point pulled up an audience member to be an impromptu moderator who was 1000% times more effective than Gould. Seeing the perturbed looks on the faces of the panelists was frustrating and watching Jackson, who was more talkative than usual, being cut off by Gould wanting to bring whatever topic back to himself was truly painful.
GO TEAM VENTURE!
