Josef Albers’s first architectural commission was this stained-glass window, "Rosa Mystica Ora Pro Nobis,” which he designed around 1917 for St. Michael’s Church in his hometown of Bottrop, Germany. In a letter to Gottfried Heinersdorff, who executed the window, Josef described the nuances of color and light, noting his intention for “a deep velvety mystical appearance ... in tones of dark violet and blue.” Unfortunately, the original window was destroyed during WWII but in 2...011 the Albers Foundation commissioned three reproductions based on a drawing of the original. One of the reproductions was reinstalled in the window’s original location at St. Michael's, pictured here.
