Djungi Gulpilil
(GULPILIL FAMILY)
AUGUST 7 - SEPTEMBER 18
... David Gulpilil Ridjimiraril Dalaithngu is an actor, dancer, singer and a painter. He is a Yolŋu man from Northeast Arnhem Land whose Country, Gulparil Marwuyu, lies adjacent to Gurrwiliny the great Arafura Swamp south of the Ramingining township.
David has been diagnosed with a whitefella’s disease, lung (warr’warr) cancer, and lives outside Adelaide (Tarntanya) so he can receive the best of whitefella’s medicine. A long way from his culture, language and kin, he yearns for country, and family.
Through this exhibition, Djungi Gulpilil, (Gulpilil Family) these yearnings are brought closer to David, to remind him of his beginnings. Many in David’s family are artists. His twin sister (yapa), Mary Dhapalany, is one of the leading First Nations weavers. One of his wives, Robyn Djunginy, was renowned for her bottle paintings. His brother, Peter Minygululu, was an artist known for his detail and story-telling.
Djungi Gulpilil honours not only David but also David’s family and the strong Yolŋu rom (culture) that binds them.
The Djungi Gulpilil Exhibition also features a curated selection of free screenings running Monday-Saturday. All films were made with and/or by
the Yolngu community of Ramingining, Arnhem Land.
