Only four (4) Fletcher class destroyers still exist (KIDD, THE SULLIVANS, and CASSIN YOUNG in the U.S., and CHARRETTE / VELOS in Greece). But artifacts still remain from their sisters. The torpedo tubes from USS FOOTE (DD-511) now reside at The National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas. A member of the famed DESRON 23 "Little Beaver" squadron, FOOTE served during #WWII, taking a torpedo hit that blew off her stern during the Battle of Empress Augusta Bay on ...November 02, 1943. She survived, was repaired, and returned to the front for operations in the Philippines and off Okinawa. FOOTE earned four battle stars for her service in that war, was decommissioned in 1946 and placed in reserve, and scrapped in 1974.
