EDITOR'S NOTE: Leading a student publication during this time of crisis takes a different level of courage and strength. It requires one to dedicate a huge amount of time, focus, and effort to spearhead the publication's daily operations to live up to its mandate to the public.
Over the past months, the whole Collegian staff has made it a point to do the best that we can in order to deliver the most pressing information that the people need to know about, despite the limitati...ons that our current setup entails. It was challenging yet worthwhile, as we are well aware of the critical role that our stories play in the people's day-to-day life.
The coming months would not be any easier, no thanks to the government's botched pandemic response, but the publication will continue to do its part in helping people out. To this end, the Collegian editorial board will implement changes to help the publication function more effectively—among which is the appointment of an interim editor-in-chief.
We would like to inform everyone that I, Beatrice Puente, resigned from my post as of yesterday, September 5, due to personal and economic reasons primarily brought about by the pandemic. Our editorial term officially ended during the last week of July, and we have since been serving in a holdover capacity. The university administration has yet to issue a directive on how the holdover term will officially proceed, so we have decided to implement these necessary changes now.
To ensure the smooth functioning of the publication, I had recommended the appointment of Ms. Kimberly Anne P. Yutuc as the interim EIC of the Collegian, until a new editor is selected through a competitive examination. Yutuc placed third in last year's editorial exams, next to Mr. John Irving Gandia, who had expressed in a letter dated July 9 his inability to take on the responsibilities of the Collegian EIC, should I be unable to proceed with the holdover term.
Yutuc, who formerly served as managing editor and graphics editor, has exemplified the ability to lead the publication that is nearing its centennial year. We count on your continued support for the publication, as we commit to improve the ways in which we do journalism.
