Bill Raynor Micronesia Challenge PhD Student Nicole Yamase has made history! Yesterday, she reached a depth of 35,764 feet below sea level in the deepest place ...on earth, the Challenger Deep located in Federated States of Micronesia territorial waters in the Mariana Trench. She is now only the third woman in history to reach full ocean depth and the first Pacific Islander to do so.
Ms. Yamase dove in the world’s only private submersible capable of reaching ‘full ocean depth’ or 36,000ft depth. The DSV ‘Limiting Factor’, a Triton Submarines 36,000/2 piloted by its owner Victor Vescovo, world record holder, researcher, scientist and adventurer.
The full dive took 10 hours, 4 hours to the bottom, 2 hours on the ground, and 4 more hours to get back up. In a conversation with MCT she said it was just like being on the moon, but underwater! Can not wait to hear more from her soon!
