Good morning, world. Today is my birthday, which means I've made very few appointments. If I have made an appointment with you, however, fear not--there is at least a 60% chance that I will keep it.
I'm obscenely--profanely--fortunate: meaningful work, good friends, safe environs. If I were to make a cheeky birthday wish, it might have the world 'pre-order' in it, but we all know that's too cheap a ploy to play well.
In all seriousness, if you are the sort of friend or acqu...aintance that would offer to buy me a birthday drink, I'd humbly ask that you consider redirecting those funds here:

My friend, Sara Lindsay, is traveling to Liberia where she'll work as volunteer, helping former child soldiers. She'll focus much of her effort on the women who served as sex slaves when they were girls. I'm grateful for the work that Sara does, in the same way that I'm grateful to the dedicated teachers and public servants I meet here, because in some way it feels like those people--doing the hard work--make the rest of our work possible. Sounds like a speech in a second-rate drama, I know, but I mean it. And sometimes, in the midst of living my own dream, I feel a little guilty that achieving my goals doesn't do enough for enough people. I'm really living in my own little world of concerts and tour vans and Twitter and webstores. So, I feel genuinely lucky to be able to donate directly to people who give more of their daily lives than I do. Sarah, thanks for the work you're doing. Hope you rake it a little birthday cash.
For the rest of us: the more we give, the longer Sara's able to serve.
