The new NIO et7 electric sedan has been unveiled in China on 'NIO Day'. And check that enormous screen on the first photo. That is the largest stage-screen I have ever seen. The real car is standing on the stage below, looking very tiny.
The et7 competes directly with the Tesla Model S.
The et7 comes in 3 kinds: 70 kWh battery, 100 kWh battery, and an optional 150 kWh solid state battery. NEDC range is 500, 700, and 1000 km respectively. The solid state battery has an energy density of 360Wh/kg.
Power comes from two electric motors, front and rear, good for a combined output of 644 hp and 850 Nm. The 0 to 100km acceleration is 3.9s. The braking distance from 100 kilometers to zero is 33.5m, and the drag coefficient is 0.23 Cd.
The autonomous driving system is called Aquila, and it consist of, take a deep breath: 33 high-performance sensing sensors, including 11 8-megapixel high-definition cameras and 1 ultra-long-distance high-definition camera. One high-resolution lidar with a 500 meter range(located in a pod above the windscreen), 5 millimeter-wave radars, 12 ultrasonic radars, and 2 high-precision positioning units. The system generates 8GB of data per second, which is analyzed by an onboard 'supercomputer' called Adam.
You can either own the battery pack or subscribe to NIO's Battery-as-a-Service (baas) program, where you can swap your empty battery at any of NIO's swapping station. The company says they will have 500 such stations in China at the end of the year.
Pricing starts at 448.000 yuan for the 70 kWh version and ends at 506.000 yuan for the 100 kWh version. Pricing for the solid-state variant hasn't been announced yet.
Size: 5098,?, 1505, and 3060.
The interior looks super clean and comes with a cool digital assistant sitting on dash-top. The main screen is large but not overly so. The steering wheel is almost beautiful ad there is a mid-size free-standing digital instrument panel. The audio system has 23 speakers and a 100 watt output!
All very impressive and it is a good looking car too. It may as well be the first EV that can really beat a Tesla Model S. But there is a small problem. Deliveries will only start in Q1 2020, a full year from today, and by that time Tesla has likely launched a Model S update already. So NIO better hurry up!
