11 November 2021| The Tagima (now Basilan) marker was unveiled at Fuego Fuego Beach Front in Barangay Tabiawan, City of Isabela de Basilan. Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia A. Turabin- Hataman led the unveiling ceremonies alongside the national government representative, Department of Tourism Undersecretary Myra Paz Valderrosa – Abubakar and Deputy Speaker for Mindanao and Lone District Representative of Basilan Province Mujiv S. Hataman. Other key personalities ...who joined the launching event were Provincial Administrator Manny Muarip, Basilan Vice Governor Yusof Alano, Vice Mayor Jhul Kifli Salliman, Maluso Municipal Mayor Hon. Hanie Bud, Tipo-Tipo Municipal Mayor Hon. Arcam Istarul and Tabiawan Barangay Chairperson Oscar Bernardo. Different representatives from the academe, the security, CSOs, media and religious sectors and the various department heads of the Local Government Unit of Isabela de Basilan were in full force in celebrating this milestone event.
The event is the 25th of the 34 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines spearheaded by the National Quincentennial Committee and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in partnership with the City Government of Isabela de Basilan through its Tourism Office, the Provincial Government of Basilan, the Department of Interior and Local Government and the Department of Defense.
The Vicinity of the Tagima Quincentennial Historical Marker at Fuego Fuego Beach Front in Tabiawan Isabela de Basilan was erected to acknowledge the role of Basilan (then called Tagima before the arrival of the Spaniards) in the achievement of science and humankind in circumnavigating the planet for the first time 500 years ago.
The entire community of the Happy City of Isabela de Basilan led by City Mayor Sitti Djalia A. Turabin Hataman is in one accord in the celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Filipinos’ First recorded contact to the world.
The marker which is located at Fuego Fuego Beach Front, Tabiawan Barangay, Isabela de Basilan, commemorates our pre-colonial ancestors whose names are only known to the creator, yet they contributed to the achievement of science and humankind in the first recorded circumnavigation of our home planet, further establishing that the earth is indeed round.
TAGIMA – witnessed the said journey, proof that we have been existing in this part of the world when the earliest recorded circumnavigators voyaged our way. While the exact location cannot be established it is with great honor that Isabela de Basilan accepts and cradles this state historical marker on behalf of the island, and freedom and peace loving people of Tagima – present day Basilan.
The unveiling was originally scheduled on the 11th of October 2021, but due to COVID-19 the event was moved to November 11, 2021.
