"It's important so that Europe reflects its population. 52 percent of our population are women and, therefore, we should have at least that amount in the Commission and in other posts across Europe."

STORYLINE:
A day ahead of a crucial EU summit to choose Europe's next set of leaders, women gathered outside the summit venue to call for leaders to keep gender equality in mind when deciding.
The demonstration was organised by female Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and several dozen of them took part.
"It seems like you have to be a man to get a top job in the European Union and it shouldn't be like that," said Emilie Turunen, who at 25 is the youngest MEP.
"It should be on qualifications. And I must say, there are several very well qualified women in European politics that could be new commissioners," she added.
Rebecca Harms, MEP and Co-president of The Greens/European Free Alliance in the European Parliament Group, also said she felt increasingly angry that the nominations for the next Commission of the European Union did not include enough women as candidates.
"I'm totally dissatisfied with the nomination process of top jobs in the European Union, I find it unacceptable that women apparently are not supposed to have an equal chance," she said.
British MEP Diana Wallis noted that "52 percent of our population are women" and argued this should be reflected in the distribution of European posts.
Former Latvian president Vaira Vike-Freiberga is the only formally announced female candidate for the EU presidency.
At a dinner Thursday, the leaders of the European Union's 27 member nations are to pick a president and foreign minister for Europe in an election so unpredictable that it could be a lottery.
The only certain thing is that there's going to be an hours-long dogfight over jobs for political pals that diplomats expect will drag on into the small hours Friday.
Weeks of behind-the-scenes diplomacy have yielded a plethora of candidates, most of the undeclared.
The new jobs are the result of an EU reform treaty that takes effect December 1.
