After losing his leg in combat (Nov. 27th, 1943), he underwent surgery and was given a prosthetic leg. Months of rehabilitation allowed him to return to the cockpit as a flight instructor in 1944.
He returned to combat in 1945 in the Ki-100, intercepting Allied air attacks on the Japanese homeland. He became known among his peers as the "Tin-legged Ace" because of his combat prowess and prosthetic leg.
