This song of immigration was popularised by Tommy Makem. Though many people think he wrote the lyrics, he actually said he learned it from his grandmother, and the song is probably as old as Loch Lomo
...
nd, the Scottish song which uses the same 18th century Scottish tune - "Kind Robin Lo'es Me".
It was also sung, in a rather different style, by Joe Heany, who said he got it from his grandfather.
There are some good renditions on YouTube, including one by garibelon, who did it as a request for me. You can also hear the Ennis sisters, with the Chieftains.
Lyrics and chords:
.. C........... Am ............. Dm .................... F
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
.. C........... Am ......... F .. G
Fair is the lily of the valley
.... F............ Am........... Dm.... C......... Am
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
........ C........... Am.......... Dm C
But my love is fairer than any.
Come over the hills, my bonnie Irish lass
Come over the hills to your darling.
You choose the rose, love, and I'll make the vow
And I'll be your true love forever.
'Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the stars they were shining
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she'd be my love forever.
It's not for the parting that my sister pains
It's not for the grief of my mother
'Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.
