s most famous for representing Guantanamo Bay detainees, an experience he describes in his book Bad Men: Guantanamo Bay And The Secret Prisons.
He is also known for his work for the Southern Prisoners' Defence Committee (now Southern Centre for Human Rights), defending the rights of those on death row.
Stafford Smith was born in Cambridge and educated at Radley College. He moved to the US after winning a Morehead Scholarship to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he studied journalism before enrolling in the Columbia University Law School in New York.
He was awarded the OBE for "Humanitarian services in the legal field". In 2004 he returned to the UK. He is now the Legal Director of Reprieve.
