March 23, 2017 - 'Off the Page - Maria Sibylla Merian' - Art Exhibit at Lloyd Library and Museum, Cincinnati Ohio
Considered the First Lady of Naturalism from the 1700's, Maria Sibylla Merian is the
...
perfect example of how closely science and art intertwine. While there have been a number of books addressing the work and contribution of Maria, there have been very few exhibitions outside of books under glass available for public observation. This exhibition presents a very new way to view not only the historical prints themselves, but also lends an eye into the process before their production.
Join Meddling with Nature as we take Maria's original early 1700's seminal work on entomology and metamorphosis in Suriname off the page. We will recreate her colored illustrations as sculpture using real insect, animal, and botanical specimens in an exhibition opening at the Lloyd Library & Museum in Cincinnati in March of 2017.
