The British came and conquered it for more than hundred years..
Declared as ancient monument by Government of Bombay..
Still standing tall..Bahadur Shah, a Mughal Emperor had built the Bassein Fort in the 1530s.
The fort covers an area of around 110 acre.
The Portuguese conquered and destroyed most of the fort to remodeled it into a flourishing city.
In the 18th century, the fort was conquered by the Marathas.
and then the British took over the fort in the First Anglo-Maratha War.

How to Reach :
From Mumbai : It's about 73 Kilometres from Mumbai and takes about 2 hours time to reach. Drive straight towards Vasai Virar on NH8, turn left onto Sativali Road, continue straight to Gokhivare Road, Reach Ambadi Road to Chimaji Appa Ground, then Killa Road.
You can ask locals for directions.
From Vasai : About 7 Kilometres from Railway Station (East). Buses can drop you till the main entry point. From their private autos can take you to the main entrance or to the Dock.

-Vasai Victory Pole
flat platform bearing a stark flagpole.
In 1739, the Battle of Vasai was fought between the Marathas and the Portuguese.
Marathas conquered the fort and unfurled their flag after here.

Franciscan of Saint Anthony
Built in memory of Saint Anthony, who passed away in 1231. The church dates back to 1557.
There are around 250 tombstones on its floor
They belong to Portuguese nobles.

Shreemant Chimaji Ballal Peshwa.
Great warrior and younger brother of Peshwa Baji Rao I.
Marathas were led by him to capture Vasai Fort.
It was a major achievement of Baji Rao I's reign.

St Gonsalo Garcia Church:
St Gonsalo Garcia (1556 - 1597)
Declared a saint by the Catholic Church in 1862.
He is The 1st Indian saint of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Vasai
His feast day is a joint one for the group of martyrs, on February 6.
A college is named after him in Vasai.
