ganda and incitement", after China's 1989 democracy protests in Tiananmen Square. Li's family found him dead hanging in a hospital ward in Shoayang City on Wednesday morning where he was being treated for heart disease and diabetes, but family members questioned this account. Authorities have ruled his death a suicide, but confiscated his body before his family could take photo evidence. He had been released from jail one year prior.
Li's brother-in-law says the family does not believe Li took his own life.

"We are questioning this [suicide], he was in prison for more than 20 years, and had a strong spirit. We cannot understand this, so really, in our hearts, we don't believe this was a suicide."
Li Wangyang was jailed for 22 years for participating in the 1989 Tiananmen protest. Rights groups say Li had suffered abuse in prison, and was left deaf and blind. The activist was released in May last year but authorities kept him under 24-hour surveillance in the hospital. Li's supporters say his death is highly suspicious and have made calls online for an investigation.
