The two met in 2001 and began producing electronic music in their freshman year of university. They bonded over a love of neo-psychedelia from the 1970s and 80s, bands like Chrome, Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized. The pair started creating loops of sounds and noise in their dorm rooms. They didn’t start singing over their tracks until they started writing pop songs. The idea of pop-music was a joke to these two, it’s why they initially called themselves “The Management,” it was a stab at the corporate side of the music industry. They were in charge. This video essay covers MGMT's entire discography from Oracular Spectacular to Congratulations to their self-titled and even to their forthcoming release, Little Dark Age. The group have been trying to shed their past personas that gave, "Kids," "Time to Pretend," and "Electric Feel" to the world. They've yet to replicate the successes of those singles, but by choice.
