action, Flt Lt Tambay is believed to have been one of the five pilots reported by Pakistan Observer to have been captured alive on 5 December 1971. Although a number of reports from eye witnesses have subsequently suggested that Flt Lt Tambay was indeed captured alive, he was not repatriated at the end of the war.
STORY
Damayanti Tambay was married to Flt lt VV Tambay a year before the 1971 war. She believes he is still languishing in some jail across the border.
Her one wish? To bring him back.
Her struggle to bring him back home finds echoes in the lives of the family members of 54 such missing defense personnel from the 1971 Indo Pak War. "We have been writing to the Indian government, which has been writing to Pakistan," says Damayanti Tambay "Our evidence has been going from one end to the other, and they always come back to us with the request to provide more evidence," she says.
"The Indian government often states that the relatives have accumulated the proofs and that the Indian government is pressurising the Pakistan government because of the insistence of the relatives. This weakens the case."
