r completion in October 2015. The colossal work is composed of 20 steel plates each weighing 24 tons, 32 feet in height, 4 feet 8 inches wide and 8 inches thick, resting on a base of reinforced concrete.
The maquette of the final sculpture is currently on display at Arsenal Montréal among a selection of other works spanning Vaillancourt’s 60 year career. The artist has been a longtime supporter of various causes, primarily among them the Quebec labour movement. We visited him at his home/studio, where we dug around his archives comprising hundreds of notebooks, press clippings and other artefacts, which refer to nearly 3000 of his artworks.
