its origin is murky. On the day we filmed this recipe; Wikipedia says that the recipe originated in the early 1900s and was first published in 1938 in New England. This recipe is from 1915 and was published in Canada, so the Wiki story doesn't add up. I looked back farther and found this recipe in newspapers across the U.S. as early as 1877 - so the recipe goes back, way back. It probably originates in the early 1800s, but that will take more research.
Ingredients:
2 cups hot mashed potatoes
2 cups sugar
1 cup sweet milk
2 Tablespoons butter
5 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
Five Roses Flour to make a soft dough
Method:
Mix as usual.
Roll out ½ inch thick.
Fry in hot grease.
