In the fall of 1983, Huey Lewis and his band the news released their third album, Sports. Huey had started out in the band Clover in the San Francisco scene before releasing one single under the name Huey Lewis and the American Express, which secured a deal with Chrysalis records. Chrysalis wasn’t crazy about his band name, fearing that the credit card company would sure them. In early 1980 the band changed their name to Huey Lewis and the News and released their debut record, which was self titled. It didn’t make much noise on the charts, hitting #203 on the album charts but it was a stepping stone to their sophomore album, Picture This.
Released in early 1982, it put Huey and the news on the map as their first single Do You Believe in Love climbed the charts up to #7, with its soulful rendering and hypnotic chorus. The song was actually written by famed producer Mutt Lange. From there the second single Hope You love me like you Say you Do went to the top 40 and another single Working For A Livin, an original penned by Huey and band mate Chris Hayes just missed the top 40 stalling at #41 but the song became a classic of the news canon.
There was also, a cover of the late Phil Lynott song “Giving it All up For Love” Lynott the singer and bassist of the legendary group Thin Lizzy. Huey actually played harmonica on Phil’s first solo records,.as well as with Thin Lizzy’s live album.
From there Huey Lewis and the news kept pace with the Princes and Michael Jacksons of the world, as Huey kept releasing hit single after hit single, Their Third single The Heart of Rock and Roll was the song that sealed the deal for Sports. As the song peaked at #6 on the billboard hot 100, the album snuck into the #1 spot on the billboard album chart, with was a major coup as Prince Purple Rain and Michael Jackson Thriller and the Footloose movie soundtrack had absolutely dominated the chart up to that point, it was actually the year that the least amount of different artists were #1 on the album charts. Although Sports finished 1984 at #2 on the year end chart, as further proof that it was an album for the ages. The competition was absolutely fierce and It was no different on the Hot 100, In another year, the Heart of Rock and Roll might've been a #1 hit, but in 1984 the charts were chock full of excellence. The week Huey’s song peaked at #6, the five songs ahead of it were, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper, Let’s Hear it For the Boy, by Deniece Williams, Oh Sherry By Steve Perry, The Reflex by Duran Duran and Sister Christian by Night Ranger. 3 of those 5 were #1 hits at some point in 84 and all still resonate today. That’s how phenomenal the year 1984 was. The likes of which we’ll likely never see again.
