Next came a flood of potential followers filling the Drama Theatre of the Sydney Opera House to hear the inside word about UFO's and other supernatural phenomena. The performance concluded with the audience being subjected to a barrage of sales gimmicks, including vials of 'the tears of Carlos' ($800) or a crystal from the lost continent of Atlantis ($20,000). So is Carlos a messenger from the spirit world or pure con man? A number of TV programs and newspapers put the Carlos claims under their journalistic microscopes. But they missed one very special key element in the story. True, some of them suggested that the person who is supposed to be a channeller for Carlos, 19 year-old Jose Alvarez, may have used a little trick to make his pulse stop just before the ancient spirit allegedly inhabits his body. But no-one has come close to guessing the full extent of a fraud that could have netted a fortune in donations and purchases from hundreds of starry-eyed believers.
