In May 2006, Hector H. Balderas became the youngest statewide Hispanic elected official in the U.S. when he won his first race for New Mexico State Auditor at the age of 33.

was sitting in the studio with Ahmed Quraishi, in Islamabad, Pakistan, to tell his story, in Worldview From Islamabad, the top-rated foreign policy show at the time on PTV, Pakistan's largest broadcast network. Before that Balderas served as a State Representative in the New Mexico Legislature from 2004 to 2006. Today, he is the Attorney General for New Mexico. He is Democrat.
He joined Ahmed Quraishi with two other young politicians at the time: Republican Representative Mark Martin of Arkansas and Democrat Senator Brian A. Joyce of Massachusetts. Rep. Martin went on to become the Secretary of State of Arkansas until last year.
Sadly, Sen. Joyce passed away in 2018 at age 56.
