SYNOPSIS
Watching the doves flying over the shimmering sea from his Palace window, the Doge of Venice reminisces on the fiery dark eyes that enthralled him down in the Giudecca* quarters earlier that day, and that are now coming to haunt him...
LYRICS AND TRANSLATIONS
Doves are flying off to the sea,
They're flying away,
Over there, where the sunlight
Radiantly over the sea shines,
And long glistening silvery streaks are dancing
Like stars, sunken into the sea!
Every tower and every dome
Reflects this shimmering sea.
Behold the magic rays!
The eye sees, enchanted and inebriated,
Lost in all the splendor,
Far off in the distance, the sea!
Yes, to the sea,
Deep and majestic,
I was once married!
Princely betrothed,
Alone, the eyes full of fire,
Shined over the Giudecca*.
I am falling now
In the palace to each mirror firmly I impressed her image...
I impressed her glance...
And on the echo in the halls
It will resound all around me:
"Soon she is yours!"
