s have been a tradition since the Monument’s dedication in 1894. They have traditionally been designed to honor the corps badges used by soldiers during the Civil War. Corps badges were brightly colored emblems of varying shape used to identify different corps of the military quickly during battle. Since the redesign of Public Square in 2016, the display has come to honor other Civil War imagery including an anchor and a G.A.R. badge.
