nghill in cumberland County, near Nova Scotia. Following the third disaster in 1958 the companies shut it`s mining operations in Springhill and they never reopened. Today the mine properties, among the greatest in the world (2 miles) and filled with water, are owned by the government of Nova Scotia and provide Springhill`s idustrial park with a source of geothermal heat".
The first mining disaster killed 125 men. The second killed 35 men that both were due to explosions and fire. The third disaster was caused by an underground quake that killed 74 miners. The accumulation of all three disasters made news thoughout the world.
Peter, Paul and Mary sing about the 1958 quake disaster. Song written by Seegar-McColl.
