“The Trout at Rainbow’s End” is a 1957 black-and-white episode of the docudrama “Silent Service” — about the U.S. Navy's submarine fleet. All stories were based on fact and the realism was heightened
...
by actual use of combat footage from the files of the Navy. The stories were varied between the South Pacific during World War II and the Korean War. The series was the brainchild of Rear Admiral Thomas M. Dykers, who retired from the Navy in 1949 after 22 years service.
Dykers introduces this episode — about a mission during World War II by the submarine USS Trout (SS-202) — involving transporting a large amount of gold and silver. Mark 01:10 takes the viewer to Pearl Harbor in 1942 and onboard the Trout as the crew prepares for a special mission, including loading anti-aircraft ammunition. The historic footage is interspersed with fictionalized scenes featuring actors Robert Karnes, Dennis McCarthy, and Joseph Sargent.
With Hollywood flare, the episode explains (starting at mark 04:45) how in January 1942 the USS Trout departed on its mission to deliver ammunition to the besieged American forces on Corregidor, maneuvering through a mine field in the process as the explosives scrape across the sub’s hull at mark 08:38. On Corregidor, the sailors work to devise a plan to compensate for the weight lost after unloading the ammunition. After failing to secure sandbags, the Hollywood crew of the Trout is shown at mark 13:35 settling on 20 tons of gold bars and silver pesos from the Philippine currency reserve, which safely helps the sub return to Pearl Harbor. (Not before encountering an enemy freighter at mark 18:00 and taking it out with a torpedo). With all of the currency accounted for at mark 20:48 — sans a single gold bar mistakenly left behind — the episode draws to a close with an interview with the Trout’s former commanding officer, Rear Admiral Frank Wesley “Mike” Fenno.
