Curtis Harrington played a pivotal role in early avante garde film in Hollywood, after directing a series of short films in the 1940s-50s he went on to direct Night Tide with Dennis Hopper, What's the Matter with Helen with Debbie Reynolds as well as several other films dealing with macabre subjects and ending his career with an adaptation of Edgar Alan Poe's House of Usher.
