The Music and Lyrics of this classic Australian song were written by Jack O'Hagan. First published in 1922, It sold over a million copies in its first year.
In "olden times" Gundagai was the half way point between Sydney and Melbourne. The first house, the Rose Inn, was built there in 1852.
The legend of the dog sitting on the Tuckerbox, and the historical connections with the early 20th century "Dad and Dave" long running radio series, has ensured that Gundagai is deeply and comfortably ensconced in the Australian psyche.
