Jones, and commissioned on 27 August 1940, with Lieutenant Commander William Lovett Anderson (Annapolis, Class of 1926) in command. Thresher received 15 battle stars and a Navy Unit Commendation for World War II service, placing her among the highest decorated US ships of the Second World War.
