This video is about a very rare endurance prototype: the Porsche LMP1/98. Well technically it's the updated version of the more known TWR-Porsche WSC-95, originally built by Tom Walkinshaw Racing but

supported by the actual Porsche factory. Most of the car and the monocoque chassis are taken from the Jaguar XJR-14. Chassis was than adapted to be fitted with a spyder body to comply with the latest regulations and the engine adopted was a Type-935 turbocharged Flat-6. Only two chassis/cars were built.
The WSC-95 was meant to be raced in the IMSA World Sportscar Championship but during the first shakedown in december 1994 at Daytona the car was 3 seconds faster than the ultimate pace. This was something IMSA organizers didn't approve so the forced the team to run restrictors and adding 50kg on the weight of the car. With less power and more weight the TWR Porsche would be a further four seconds slower. So they decided to withdraw the cars from the Daytona 24 Hours. For the same reason they couldn't attend the Sebring 12 Hours and their first Le Mans 24 Hours entrance was cancelled due to the tight finances at Porsche.
In February 1996 Joest Racing team convinced Porsche to give the unused prototypes to his team to compete in the 1996 24 Hours of Le Mans while Porsche was focusing on their 911-based GT1 car.
After some aerodynamic changes and improvements the Joest WSC-95 was raced and was able to win the 1996 24h but also the 1997 edition after many other upgrades were done on the car.
In 1998 Porsche celebrated their 50th anniversary and they were aiming to another great victory at Le Mans. So they conceive a new 911 GT1 racer and the two WSC-95s were considerably modified to become the Porsche LMP1/98 you see in this video. The "98" was fitted with some parts of the 911 GT1 such as the engine and the sequential gearbox. To ensure Porsche would receive full credits for the victory the two cars were entered by Porsche themselves but unfortunately they neither managed to finish the race but luckily it was won by one of their new 911 GT1.
The LMP1/98 you see in this video is chassis 002 and it's the only 98 still "alive" since chassis 001 was restored back to its successful WSC-95 configuration. It is powered by a 3.2-litre Flat-6 engine linked to two turbochargers that allows the car to have around 540 hp (with restrictors) at 7,200 rpm on a car that weighs around 890kg.
