d line which opened in 2007, roughly two thirds of the way from Paris. In this Driver's eye view, we board train number 2424, the 1213 to Paris calling only at Saverne. Until the opening of phase two of the LGV (Ligne รก Grand Vitesse) TGVs take the classic main line route enabling us to enjoy the best of both worlds and experience the contrast between the old and the new.
Roughly half the running time is on the classic line, taking us through a particularly scenic part of France over the Vosges mountains. We then join the start of the new line at Baudrecourt and accelerate up to the full line speed of 320 kmh (200 mph) the fastest in Europe. Our cameras follow the action in the cab, from the trackside and inside the LGV Est signal centre at Pagny Sur Moselle.
Written by Eurostar and TGV expert Mike Hill, narration is by Jonathan Kydd in English and by Yves Aubert in French (menu selection). Stereo running time is 103 minutes.
