with whole neighboured listening, it was a must. Nicky Blackmarket (NBM) was the people's favourite. He played the ravers' selection that the people always wanted to hear, serving the best bass line tracks of that era. Although at the time the wounds were still fresh from the scene's loss of their shining star, Stevie Hyper D (RIP). You couldn't help thinking these tracks and those drops were made for Hyper D to baptise with pure fire. Nicky's Kool FM shows always featured Stevie until his death and during this set there were still messages of respect in celebration of the life and work of Stevie Hyper D.
Funky Flirt was a legendary old skool DJ from the Weekend Rush FM days, and in recent years had secured himself as part of the Kool FM furniture. He would continue to headline top events of that year like Telepathy @The Temple, Tottenham London N17, on Saturday 27 March 1999. Also, Heat & Jungle Fever (Friday 17 September 1999 @Hastings Pier, where he would go back to back with Nicky Black Market and Devious D).
Shabba D was stepping up a gear touring Japan and parts of Europe he had already established connections worldwide also forming the SASAS a year earlier with Skibadee and Shockin B. In the years that followed Shabba would set up Highly Blessed Recordings with Skibadee, also running the MC Convention @The Rex (Stratford), which gave an opportunity to other up and coming MCs to break through. Shabba D always supported up and coming MCs, he brought through the likes of Maxwell D, Stormin (RIP), Harry Shotta, Grima and many other MCs. With that in mind you thought it would have silenced his critics. He also founded the Rawhill Cru which extended a collective partnership with artists from different musical genres, with likes of Tenor Fly, The Ragga Twins, Navigator, Daddy Freddy, Spyda and Soultrain. They hooked up with German Drum & Bass producers and released tracks like Rawhill Cru - Mo' Fire (U3R Music, 2002), Rawhill Cru - Helpless (U3R Music, 2003). Shabba D was constantly putting in the work and it was by no fluke or coincidence that he formed the formidable SASASAS (Skibadee, Shabba D, Grima, Harry Shotta, Stormin (RIP), Phantasy and Macky G).
MC Riddla D was a grafter and his own man. He put in the hours on London pirate radio stations like Flight FM, Cyndicut FM and Rude Awakening FM before moving to the dizzy heights and becoming part of the Kool FM Hit Squad, in 1999. He featured on all the big name events that year: One Nation @Stratford Rex, Best of British @Bagleys, Telepathy @The Temple, Desire @Bagleys, Heat & Jungle Fever @Astoria, Pure Science @Atomics, and many top raves that year. In later years he also featured at the MC Convention @Stratford Rex. Towards the late 2000s Riddla began his career as a Hip Hop artist working with UK and international artists and hasn't returned to DNB since then.
Original Junglists have called for his return to the scene, but with the change in direction Drum & Bass took over the last ten years some MCs moved on whilst others that left like Evil B (B Live) returned and revived their career. All that being said Riddla goes down as a top MC in the Drum & Bass history books who did the rounds at all the prestigious DNB events in the early 2000s. We salute you MC Riddla D. Check out our channel for more recordings of him.
