d BattaBox managed to catch some of the most colourful of the masquerades in Nigeria on camera (a dangerous prospect and not something we take lightly - we made offering o!)
Masquerades play an important part in Nigeria culture and heritage, they help to preserve and bind the stories, heritage and beliefs of local communities across the country. But as Christianity becomes more widespread, so the celebration of Masquerades in Nigeria becomes more of a rarity.

Filming masquerades in Nigeria can be difficult and oftentimes seen as disrespectful, but at the Lagos Black Heritage Festival earlier this year they were out in force!
The masquerades, traditional drummers and dancers came out for the festival in Lagos Freedom Park -- where the notorious Broad Street Prison prison once stood. The festival celebrates African creativity with a carnival of traditional and contemporary arts.
In Ekiti, the Epa masquerades are most often seen between March and September (according to JR Ojo) and the motifs on the headpieces often represent warriors, medicine and mothers & children.
Masquerades are most often called by the traditional talking drum.
