But as Christianity becomes more widespread, so the celebration of Masquerades in Nigeria becomes more of a rarity. - the origin of the Igunuko - common amongst the Nupe and Yoruba - remains shrouded in mystery - Filming masquerades in Nigeria can be difficult and oftentimes seen as disrespectful, but at the Lagos Black Heritage Festival earlier this year they were out in force! The masquerades, traditional drummers and dancers came out for the festival in Lagos Freedom Park -- where the notorious Broad Street Prison prison once stood. The festival celebrates African creativity with a carnival of traditional and contemporary arts. In Ekiti, the Epa masquerades are most often seen between March and September (according to JR Ojo) and the motifs on the headpieces often represent warriors, medicine and mothers & children.
