Trailer for documentary, 'GI Says'. 'GI Says' is a #Vietnamwar #documentary about the most surprising underground GI publication of all time, and the only known underground #antiwar publication print
...
ed by an active duty soldier-publisher in Vietnam during the war. 'GI Says' was a hand printed magazine, published on a mimeograph machine at Camp Evans near the DMZ. The 'zine is most (in)famous for reporting on a rumored 'bounty' of $10000 to kill 'Blackjack', aka Col. Wendell Honeycutt, commander of the dubious Hamburger Hill Operation.
Vietnam War veteran and long time journalist Ken Anderberg relates his experience serving on the front lines in the Ashau Valley, then later at Camp Evans near the DMZ during the Vietnam War. It was at Camp Evans that he created and published the underground magazine - or 'zine' - 'GI Says' as a response, in part, to the controversial leadership of Col, Weldon Honeycutt at the recently concluded operations at Hill 937, aka 'Hamburger Hill'.
Following the conclusion of operations against Hill 937 (aka Hamburger Hill) many GIs ('grunts') expressed dissatisfaction with Honeycutt and other higher echelon leadership which resulted in an inordinate number of casualties for little or no tangible gain. Many GIs subsequently articulated a desire to 'frag' Honeycutt (i.e., kill him with a fragmentation grenade). This sentiment among GIs found its way into 'GI Says' in the form of an impromptu Wanted poster with a $10,000 'bounty' for 'Blackjack' (which was the call sign for Col. Honeycutt). The publication of that bounty, even as truthful reportage, famously nearly ended up sending its author to Leavenworth federal penitentiary...if not for an amazing and lucky twist of fate.
