ral thousand officers of the Ministry participated in the parade. Employees of different departments of the ministry took part in the activity.
The parade was attended by the representatives of government, military service, diplomatic corps and international missions.
Georgia's President Mikheil Saakashvili made a speech during the police parade. President spoke about the significance of the day, emphasizing the role of the police in the formation of modern Georgia.
"Police reform was the first reform we carried out and remains the first symbol of our transformation and creation of our new statehood", the President said.
Saakashvili compared Soviet militia and modern Georgian police. He assesses that the leading difference is not in forms, vehicles, armament, salary or eradication of corruption. "The main difference is that the soviet militia looked at our people as at their possession, objects of torture and extortion. Today's police consider that they belong to people, represent, protect and serve them. That's why people respond with love", - Mikheil Saakashvili said.
The President says that society regards policemen with love and respect, as to the defenders of their homeland. "Success of our police is clear -- according to the conclusion of international objective organizations, our police is the number one corruption fighter in the world", - President stated.
6 May was declared as Police Day last year. St. George's day as well as the Day of the Adjarian Revolution are also marked on 6 May. Various events are scheduled. The event will be wrapped by concert and grandiose fireworks.
