South of Rethymno and Georgioupoli, after passing through the villages of Episkopi, Argyroupoli, Asi Gonia and Kallikratis there used to be a narrow gravel road descending over 1000 metres (3300 feet)
...
down a steep mountain side providing a short route into Frangokastelo from the north.
By 2008 the route had been upgraded to a single track tarmac road.
The extremely tight hairpins, meant that passage for all vehicles was still both difficult and exciting.
By 2009 the road had been widened allowing easier passage.
Vehicles travelling in opposite directions can now pass each other with ease.
Within a short period it is highly likely that safety barriers will be installed along the road.
This road improvement, like many others currently being undertaken on the island, will improve the quality of life for many; however it raises one question -
Is the very character of Crete which attracted tourists to the island in the first place being destroyed?
This video documents the road as it was in August 2009.
