The Finnish Supreme headquarters ordered the foundation of an armoured division on 28 June 1942 and the actual foundation was on 30 June 1942. The division consisted of the newly formed Armoured Brigade and the old (1st) Jaeger Brigade. The Cavalry Brigade was also part of the division until January 1943. The division artillery consisted of the 14th Heavy Artillery Battalion. The division commander was Major General Ruben Lagus. During most of the war, the division was located at Petrozavodsk, but in the spring of 1944 it was moved to the Karelian Isthmus to form the reserve of the headquarters.
The Armoured Division fought in the crucial battles of 1944 and helped to contain the Soviet offensive.
The 75 years anniversary took place on 28.6. with parade, march past, inspection of troops and both modern and war time armored and motorized equipment parading past the audience and honored guests.
Panssaridivisioona 75 vuotta -tapahtuma on osa Hattulan kunnan ja Panssariprikaatin Suomi 100 -juhlallisuuksia Panssariprikaatissa Parolannummella 28.6.2017. Tapahtumassa on mukana myös kokonaisturvallisuuden juhlahanke NUKU RAUHASSA.
Panssariprikaati juhlii perinteisesti vuosipäiväänsä 28.6. Kyseisenä päivänä Äänislinnassa vuonna 1942 perustettiin Panssaridivisioona, jolla oli ratkaiseva rooli kesän 1944 torjuntataistelussa nykyaikaisimpana ja iskukykyisimpänä joukkonamme. Tästä joukosta sai alkunsa nykyinen Panssariprikaati.
Leopard 2A6
The Finnish Army originally bought 124 2A4s from surplus German stocks in 2003. Of these, 12 were converted into bridge-laying and combat engineering tanks and 12 were disassembled for use as spares, leaving 100 operational tanks. In 2009, the Finnish Army bought 15 more German surplus Leopard 2A4s for spare parts of existing fleet, bringing the total number of Finnish Leopard 2A4 tanks to 139. On 16 January 2014, Finland agreed with the Netherlands to purchase 100 used Leopard 2A6NL tanks for approximately €200 million. In 2015, most of the Leopard 2A4s were moved into reserve, with some converted into Marksman AA vehicles and mine clearing tanks.
T-72
T-72 in Finnish service, short version:
Some 160-170 T-72M1s served in the Finnish Army. About 70 T-72M1s (one armoured brigade) were bought from the Soviet Union and were delivered in 1984, 1985–1988 and 1990. A further 97 T-72M1s (including a small number of command versions T-72M1K and T-72M1K1) were bought from German surplus stocks in 1992–1994. All tanks are now withdrawn from service and almost all have been scrapped in Jyväskylä or sold as spares to the Czech Republic.
The tank:
The T-72 is a Soviet second-generation main battle tank that entered production in 1971. About 20,000 T-72 tanks were built, making it one of the most widely produced post–World War II tanks, second only to the T-54/55 family. The T-72 was widely exported and saw service in 40 countries and in numerous conflicts.
