I recorded this interview in late April. However, I encountered some technical issues with the video and it took me quite some time to sort it all out.
Once I finally got it right, I became aware th
...
at Glen had a new album coming out in October. Thus, I decided it wouldn't hurt to hold on to this a little longer and plug "Swallowed by the New." Go buy it: http://www.glenphillips.com/
That's why this episode is so many months late. And I'm so many pounds heavier. This must've been during my "fudge months."
Another note I want to address here is in regard to a George Bernard Shaw quote I share in the video: "He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches."
Some people - especially teachers - have frowned upon these words from Shaw's 1905 dramatic play "Man and Superman." But in the context of the story Glen tells, it made me completely rethink the quote and the implied meaning of "can" and "cannot."
I think I've always settled for the easy interpretation that Shaw is suggesting people who lack a particular skill are, at best, simply destined to teach others - faking it all along the way while avoiding the true pursuit of success.
But the teacher Glen references sort of challenges this simple notion that a failure to do is a reflection of one's lack of ability.
Because maybe it's not always just about talent and utilizing that talent. It can also just be the simple absence of will or fortitude. Which is completely different. And, depending on the circumstances, perhaps even noble.
Anyway, I think it makes for an interesting conversation. So, feel free to share some thoughts in the video comments.
And go buy Glen's new album. And watch the video for the song "Grief and Praise" which ties in nicely with this interview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1mosSw4Hh4
* Apparently This Matters is an interview series by Jarrett Bellini. The concept it simple: I have a case filled with postcards. On the back of each postcard, I write different topics. We pick these cards at random. And then we talk.
