onships in 1959 and met at the University of Toronto's Varsity Stadium to compete in the first Canadian intercollegiate championship for the Churchill Cup. Heavy rains had left Varsity's field a muddy quagmire in which long passes were almost impossible and players had difficulty distinguishing between the mud-caked uniforms of their team mates and their competitors. After a hard fought game, the Mustangs defeated the Thunderbirds 34-7. Upon returning home, the Mustangs and their coach, John Metras, were praised for their victory.
