In 1964 my long time friend and I went into the city to see The Beatles in their film "A Hard Day's Night" on the way back to Flinders Street station, we called into the Flinders Street studios 3DB. O
...
n arrival we were met by a Technician by the name of Keith Tilley. He was cutting the trots onto Acetates in the lathe room. He rang up to David Johnston in the studio and we went up and had a nice chat with him on air. When we were leaving Keith provided me with a copy of the station's News theme "Heart of Oak" and sporting theme "Grandstand". I treasure those recordings to this day. Years later I interviewed David Johnston and that interview is also on this channel. Here is “Heart of Oak” played by The Orchestra of HM Royal Marines conducted by Vivian Dunn. Wonderful memories of a great Melbourne Radio station. Pictured is the 45 rpm handed to me at 3DB and a 78 copy I had in my sound library.
