n 3DB in the late 1980's. The Radio station was undergoing much change at the time and finally in 1988 the call sign changed to 3TT with new personnel and a new sound. Bob was for quite some time President of the Victorian Bing Crosby Society and sadly passed away from Motor Neurone Disease in April 1993. Via his widow Janet, I purchased a lot of Bob's collection of "Bing" 78 r.p.m. disks, some LP's and reference books. When I was considering starting my own Nostalgia session on Southern FM 88.3 here in Melbourne, I asked Janet if I might honour Bob by calling that program "Thanks for the Memory". She agreed and the new "Thanks for the Memory" went to air on October 16th 1994. It is still running and this weeks' edition was #1127. These episodes of Thanks for the Memory with Bob Machliss are from late 1986 into 1987. It is quite clear that Bob loved to play his 78's live to air, and must have kept his panel operator, Frank McKay, quite busy for three hours on Sunday evenings. Most interesting to hear the news events that were happening at that time. There are some gaps in the programs where reel changes occurred, or tape damage was evident, but by and large a nice memory of this music man..Bob Machliss.
